Honeycomb Cereal

For some reason, back in 1998, I decided it would be a good idea to walk the Chicago Marathon. (Actually, it was my sister’s idea. I just decided to tag along. Full details of this adventure can be found in a certain book I wrote.) For now what’s important is the Honeycomb Cereal.

And what does Honeycomb have to do with marathon training, you might ask? Well, as it turns out, everything.

My training schedule called for endurance build-up workouts on Saturdays. This meant each week I had to walk about twice as many miles as the previous week: 8, 16, 32, 64, …, all the way up to 32,768 miles on that final week of training. At least that’s what it felt like. The days were long and difficult, especially for someone who’d never done anything like this (and more or less just decided it would be ‘fun’ at the proverbial last minute).

Stumbling into my house after a seventeen mile walk on a hot summer morning, I would always find myself oddly hungry. I have no idea why. Since I always left early in the morning, typically before sun-up, it was always high time for breakfast when I returned, no matter what the actual time of day was. And that’s where the Honeycomb comes in.

I’d pour myself a big bowl of it, top it with fresh strawberries and cold milk, and eat, eat, eat. Boy they were good! Even better than after a 26-hour fast, I would say. So good I would typically eat a second or even third serving. (Never mind that each “serving” was technically two servings already.)

“I’m training!” I’d tell myself. “It’s okay, I can eat all I want!”

Now that’s the kind of rationale that causes one to barely shed a pound during the most physically active six months of one’s entire life.

But it tasted so good and I was so worn out after those long walks. And that’s probably why I still really like Honeycomb today. It didn’t help me lose any weight, but it helped me walk 26.2 miles one day.

You know what’s the best part about Honeycomb, though? It’s the jingle. It’s absolutely brilliant. I can see the people at the ad agency sitting around a conference room table, trying to brainstorm. The group leader is asking them, “What is Honeycomb? What are we trying to capture? C’mon people, let’s have it. There are no bad ideas! Describe Honeycomb!” After a minute or two of uncomfortable silence, one guy sheepishly raises his hand, “Um … it’s big?” “Good! Good!” says the leader. “Can anyone else think of anything…?” Another minute passes, when someone proposes, “Um … it’s not small?” “Excellent, people! This is great stuff.”

And so it was born.

Honeycomb’s big.
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
It’s not small!
No, no, no!

Silly though it may be, it must work. I mean I sure feel like running to the store and replenishing my supplies.

I am so glad you put up the words to the Honeycomb jingle. I was trying to think of it yesterday and almost did a web search (because anything is more interesting than what I’m supposed to be doing.) Hard to believe I forgot the words to that tricky little ditty.

Bought the book, ( Charlie is just relentless about us buying this book) and have the same fetish for Raisin Bran Crunch.

I had a dream about Honeycomb cereal the other night. Alas, I did not give in an buy some…

I think you and I have the same cereal habits (pour a big bowl, and then a second or third!)

I have put my amateur running attempts on hold until I drop some more lbs because 1. I think it was making me more hungry 2. I felt like I could justify eating anything! “Well I jogged 3 miles today!”

I love that jingle.

I know you aren’t supposed to reward yourself with food, but one of these days Honeycomb will be in my shopping cart!

I’d forgotten about Quisp too. How about King Vitamin? Remember the jingle? “King Vitamin, have breakfast with the King! King Vitamin…”

What a goofy name for a cereal, now that I think about it.

Thanks for reminding me of the jingle…now I can’t stop playing it over and over in my head. I have a feeling I will be going to the store for a box of Honeycombs today.

Argh, thanks for putting that jingle in my head this morning!

BTW, your book is featured in my blog today (everybody buy Charlie’s book!).

Yep, I really have to watch the “entitled eating”. I’m really working out at pretty much my max capacity and still on a controlled intake, so I can’t do what I used to – “oh I’ll just have some *whatever* and work out at the gym more”. I guess it keeps me good, most of the time…

And one of these days I’ll have to find some time for reading, and read all the awesome books from the bloggers out there. I don’t know how people find the time…

No idea what honeycomb tastes like but could totally survive 3 meals per day on certain breakfast cereals over here in the UK. Something about sweet, crunchy, milky things?

Of course, if like the one’s I’m talking about (no point mentioning names as you won’t have heard of them) there is 80g% sugar, a smidging of wheat/corn with very little other nutritional value then I can see why you didnt lose weight!

Great book btw! Hoep you break even soon. If not, you could go into breakfast cereal advertising 😉

Tusc 😀

I never ever ate a honeycomb!
I loved Lucky Charms.
They’re magically delicious
Pink hearts
yellow moons
orange stars
green clovers

Haha, I’m with you, I love the jingle. I always felt gypped with this cereal though, the box is so light it feels like you’re mostly paying for air. Stinky industrial factory air too.

Actually, Nick, I look at that as one of its benefits. If I pour a serving of, say, Life cereal, then a serving of Honeycomb, I can’t help but say, “Honeycomb is big! Yeah, yeah, yeah!”
